Requirements
PGY2 Categorical General Surgery
The General Surgery Residency Program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital,
Philadelphia, PA has an ACGME accredited CATEGORICAL training position available at the PGY2 level beginning July 1, 2026. Please see the specific requirements and instructions for applying below. NOTE: Jefferson Health to sponsor H1-B and J-1 Visas at its sole discretion. The General Surgery Residency Program is a 6 year training program including 1 year of dedicated research.
PREREQUISITES (no exceptions):
Currently enrolled in a PGY 1 year for the 2025-2026 academic year and in good standing (or successful completion in good standing of ONE year of US clinical training in an ACGME accredited general surgery residency training program).
Must have graduated from an Accredited Medical School or International Medical Graduates must have a valid ECFMG certificate (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates).

1. Curriculum Vitae
2. Brief Personal Statement
3. Medical School Diploma and Transcript
4. Dean's Letter
5. USMLE Parts I, II, III scores reports
6. ABSITE scores and reports for ALL years completed
7. Three (3) current Letters of Recommendation. One of the three letters must be from the current Program Director.
8. Rotation schedule with Competency-Based Evaluations for ALL completed rotations
9. Current year semi-annual Evaluation
10. Current ACGME “General Surgery Defined Category and Minimum” and “General Surgery Year 2 Minimum” case log reports
11. ACLS, BLS and ATLS certification
12. FLS and FES Certifications (if available)
13. Copy of ECFMG (if applicable)
14. Copy of current DS2019 for J-1 Visa holders (if applicable)
15. Copy of current medical license (in training acceptable; PA preferrable but not required) and DEA (if applicable) Qualified applicants must submit the above materials in a SINGLE PDF or ZIP File with contact information.
