Chief Information Officer

We are currently searching for an strategic and innovation-driven Chief Information Officer. Our CIO will be a strategic business leader who drives competitive advantage and client satisfaction through technology innovation aligned with the Firm's vision. This role oversees all aspects of information technology, telecommunications, records management and information governance, and cybersecurity, ensuring that technology enables the Firm to meet evolving client needs, enhance operational efficiency, and maintain a competitive edge. The CIO will collaborate closely with executive leadership to develop forward-thinking solutions, foster a culture of innovation, and position Buchanan as a leader in legal technology and digital services.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Strategic Technology Leadership: Develop and execute the Firm's multi-year technology vision and innovation roadmap to support operational excellence, innovation, and client service.
- Collaborative Planning: Partner with executive leadership to align technology strategies with the Firm's overall business goals and growth plans. Engage with the other Chiefs and administrative departments to execute cross-department and strategic goals as well as support the technological needs of other departments.
- Practice Enablement: Foster a strong partnership between the IT Department and Section/Practice Group leadership to ensure that technology initiatives and operational support are optimized for client service delivery, within the bounds of overarching Firm strategies.
- Innovation & Digital Solutions: Drive the development and adoption of emerging technologies—including cloud, AI, automation, and predictive analytics to enhance efficiency, security, and client experience creating measurable client value.
- Cybersecurity & Data Privacy: Lead the firm's ISO 27001 certification and maintain compliance through robust cybersecurity protocols that protect Firm and client information. Establish and maintain continuous security improvement initiatives, lead enterprise risk management and incident response.
- Client-Focused Digital Experience: Oversee the development of digital tools, portals, and data exchange processes that improve transparency, accessibility, and client satisfaction.
- Operational Optimization: Regularly evaluate and upgrade hardware, software, and systems to ensure performance, scalability, and security, while streamlining workflows and reducing costs.
- Vendor & Stakeholder Management: Manage relationships with technology vendors, negotiate contracts, and oversee service delivery to ensure high-quality, cost-effective solutions.
- Team Development & Leadership: Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing IT team, fostering innovation, continuous learning, and alignment with strategic priorities.
- Training & Organizational Change Management: Enable successful digital transformation by applying OCM best practices throughout change initiatives (evaluation, execution, deployment, support) to secure end-user acceptance and strong adoption rates. Implement ongoing training programs to promote digital literacy and facilitate smooth adoption of new technologies across the Firm.
- Security, Business Continuity & Compliance: Develop, maintain and test comprehensive security, disaster recovery, and business continuity plans that balance Firm risk tolerance, operational requirements, and cost effectiveness to ensure resilience and regulatory compliance.
- Industry Engagement & Thought Leadership: Stay informed on legal technology trends, participate in industry forums, and promote Buchanan's leadership in legal innovation.
- Management Accountability: Draft and present reports to members of executive leadership, the Firm's Board of Directors and Shareholders on the challenges and successes in the technology space with clear demonstration of achieved ROI and business value.
- Additional Strategic Initiatives: Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO, supporting special projects and initiatives that advance the Firm's technological capabilities.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or a related field; advanced degree (MBA, MS or equivalent) preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in Management Information Systems, IT leadership, or related roles within a professional services environment.
- Broad knowledge of technology platforms, tools, applications, and communications systems relevant to a sophisticated professional setting.
- Proven ability to develop and implement innovative, cost-effective technology solutions aligned with organizational goals.
- Demonstrated experience managing IT functions supporting highly educated, professional users, with a focus on security and data sensitivity.
- Strong business acumen and understanding of organizational culture, mission, and strategic priorities across multiple locations.
- Excellent relationship-building skills, with a track record of establishing credibility and partnering effectively with senior management and attorneys.
- Exceptional communication skills—able to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences and produce clear, professional documentation.
- Strategic problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Strong leadership qualities, including team building, mentorship, and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
- High level of organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Demonstrated commitment to client service and a proactive, solutions-oriented approach.
